A Big Island man was fatally shot and a woman critically injured Wednesday night in Piçihonua in what police have classified as a suicide and attempted murder.
South Hilo Patrol officers went to the Manaolana Place home of Harry Batalona, 28, just after 7 p.m. Wednesday following a report of a shooting.
Batalona was found shot in the head and a woman, described by police as his estranged female companion, had multiple gunshot wounds.
Police identified the woman as Jolene Medeiros, 24. She did not live at the house where the shooting happened.
Fire department personnel took both people to Hilo Medical Center, where Batalona, suffering a gunshot wound to the head, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Medeiros was listed in critical condition.
Preliminary results of an autopsy performed on Batalona Thursday morning indicated that he died of a single, self-inflicted gunshot to the head, police said.
Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Section were conducting an investigation.
