All of Kapiolani Park to close midnight to 5 a.m.

Advertiser Staff

Starting tomorrow all of Kapiolani Park will close from midnight to 5 a.m. to alleviate any confusion of park hours, the city has announced.

Currently, the park section makai of Kalakaua Avenue from Kapahulu Avenue to the Natatorium closes 2 a.m. to 5 a.m., the city said.
Overnight camping has become a persistent problem at the park. In the summer of 2008, overnight camping peaked with more than 150 sleeping there at night. In 2008, the city passed a new law that provided for a stricter definition of camping and set hours — 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. — when camping is banned.
