No. 6 Duke women win ACC regular-season title

DURHAM, N.C. — Jasmine Thomas scored 21 points and No. 6 Duke clinched the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title by routing No. 21 Virginia, 83-65, last night.

Allison Vernerey added 17 points and Joy Cheek scored 13 for the Blue Devils (24-4, 12-1), winners of six straight since their only ACC loss.

After beating Virginia for the 17th straight time and winning its 16th consecutive league game at home, Duke enters the regular-season finale at rival North Carolina tomorrow having already sewn up the top seed for next week's ACC tournament.

Monica Wright, who entered averaging an ACC-best 22.7 points, scored 15 of her 27 points in the first half for Virginia (20-8, 8-5).

NO. 22 GEORGIA TECH 64, NORTH CAROLINA 57

Alex Montgomery had 20 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, and Brigitte Ardossi added 18 points to lead the host Yellow Jackets (22-7, 8-5 ACC) past the Tar Heels (17-10, 5-8).

Georgia Tech improved to 12-2 at home. Ceter DeGraffenreid led North Carolina with 25 points.

RANKED MEN

NO. 15 BUTLER 74, VALPARAISO 69

Willie Veasley scored 20 points and Matt Howard had 17 to lead the visiting Bulldogs (26-4, 18-0 Horizon League) past the Crusaders (15-16, 10-8) to stretch their nation-leading winning streak to 18 games.

The Bulldogs won without top scorer Gordon Hayward, who was out with a back injury. Howard played with a stomach ailment and Veasley missed the last game with a sprained right knee.
