UH men's basketball team loses 9th in a row, falls into last place in WAC

Advertiser Staff

The bar keeps getting lower for the University of Hawaii men's basketball team.

The Rainbow Warriors scored a season-low 50 points in a 61-50 loss to Utah State tonight.

A crowd of 2,464 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched the Rainbow Warriors lose their ninth consecutive game to fall into last place in the Western Athletic Conference. The ’Bows are 9-18 overall and 2-11 in the WAC.

Utah State improved to 23-6 overall with their 13th consecutive victory. The Aggies are in first place in the WAC at 12-2, including two wins over Hawaii.

Boise State climbed ahead of the ’Bows with a 72-59 upset of Louisiana Tech earlier in the day. Hawaii has three regular-season games remaining, and must win at least two to have a chance at qualifying for the WAC Tournament at Reno, Nev.

Four Hawaii players finished with double-figure points: Hiram Thompson scored 13, Brandon Adams and Adhar Mayen had 12 each, and Roderick Flemings 11.

It was not enough against a methodical Utah State team that took the lead late in the first half and maintained it throughout the second half.

The ’Bows stayed close to the Aggies for the first 15 minutes of the game, and even had an early 13-9 lead. With 6:40 remaining in the first half, Hawaii had a 17-15 lead.

The Aggies then closed the half with a 10-0 run to take a 25-17 lead at intermission. Hawaii went scoreless in nine consecutive possessions to end the first half.

The closest Hawaiçi got in the second half was six points. A 3-pointer by Pooh Williams gave the Aggies a 39-27 lead with 13:14 remaining, and Hawaii never threatened after that.

Jared Quayle led the Aggies with 13 points and Williams added 12.

The ’Bows will play their final home game of the season on Saturday when they host third-place Nevada. The five Hawaii seniors — Brandon Adams, Petras Balocka, Paul Campbell, Roderick Flemings and Adhar Mayen — will be honored after the game.
