'Iolani boys advance to finale

With a little motivation from Team USA, No. 1 'Iolani rallied to a 49-43 win over third-ranked Punahou in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I boys basketball playoff game last night.

A raucous crowd of about 800 at Hemmeter Fieldhouse saw the Raiders improve to 11-2 and advance to meet No. 4 Kamehameha for the ILH championship tonight at 'Iolani. Punahou fell to 8-3.

"We came in here, we knew it was going to be a dogfight and it was," Raiders' coach Dean Shimamoto said. "It was the game we expected — our guys just fought and we were fortunate to come out with the win."

'Iolani trailed 35-30 to start the fourth quarter, but reeled off a 12-0 run to surge ahead 42-35.

"It was heart," Shimamoto said of the run. "The big thing that we talked about before the game was pride. We watched a video about Team USA and it was about pride and being from America and playing for your country and we tried to pass that on to these guys; to play with pride out there."

Punahou chipped away at the lead and made it a one-possession game after a Malik Johnson putback with 25 seconds to play, which made the score 46-43.

But 'Iolani's Jarrett Arakawa made the back end of two free throws with 17 seconds left, and after a Punahou miss, Kainoa Chu sealed it with a pair of free throws with 10 seconds to play to make it 49-43.

"Coach always tells us to come out hard on defense," said Chu, who finished with a team-high 13 points. "We wanted it on defense and we came around on offense after we hit most of our free throws."
