Responding to public criticism, the state House Housing Committee will hold another hearing next week on a bill that would allow residents in planned communities to erect flagpoles to display the American or state flags.

State Rep. Rida Cabanilla, D-42nd (Waipahu, Honouliuli, `Ewa), the committee's chairwoman, said her inclination is still to have a task force study the issue. But she said she wants people to have another opportunity to testify.

The state House yesterday rejected a motion to recall the bill from Cabanilla's committee, where it had been deferred.

Video evidence of the floor session, however, suggests that there may have been enough votes for the recall. The House clerk counted 14 votes, three short of the one-third — or 17 of 51 members — needed for passage. A video suggests that 17 lawmakers actually raised their hands.

State Rep. Kymberly Pine, R-43rd (`Ewa Beach, Iroquois Point, Pu'uloa), the bill's sponsor, has the option of calling for another floor vote.
