Water main break closes Sand Island park
The Department of Land and Natural Resources has closed Sand Island State Recreation Area today following a broken 16-inch water main outside the park that was reported at 8:30 a.m. across from the Sand Island Sewer Treatment Plant. The water main serves the park comfort stations, showers and irrigation system.
DLNR said people with camping permits for the weekend will be notified and may either camp at Keaiwa state park or the Windward side tonight or seek a refund
The Division of State Parks hopes to reopen the park tomorrow morning once water service is restored by the Board of Water Supply.
Traffic is not being affected though some customers are, including at the sewer treatment plant, the U.S. Coast Guard and businesses in an industrial park.
The water main was originally installed in 1976.
