Award-winning children's author featured at local conference

Award-winning children’s author Kathi Appelt will be featured at the annual conference of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Hawaii region.

The conference will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Ala Moana Hotel.
Appelt teaches at Vermont College and is the author of more than 20 books for children and young adults, including “The Underneath,” a Newbery Honor Book and finalist for the National Book Award.
Topics for writers include character and story development, plus mini-critiques of first manuscript pages. Topics for illustrators include using references, technology and illustration and story telling. In addition, representatives of local publishers will discuss their needs and how to submit work to them.
Advance registration required. The fee is $90 for society members and $120 for nonmembers. This includes lunch. Portfolio critiques available with additional fee.
The deadline is Feb. 22.
