There were no surprises when the Pacific West Conference preseason softball poll was announced last week.

Dixie State and Hawai'i Pacific, the conference's nationally recognized teams, have been voted by league coaches to finish first and second, respectively, in the nine-team PacWest.

The Red Storm, which finished 41-13 last year, received five first-place votes. The defending league champion Sea Warriors, who went 42-12 on their way to a PacWest title, got three first-place votes.

Grand Canyon was third, UH-Hilo — which earned the only other first-place vote — was fourth and Academy of Art was fifth. Chaminade, Notre Dame de Namur, BYU-Hawai'i and Dominican followed.

Dixie State placed three players on the preseason all-conference team, led by sophomore Lauren Folta, a 2009 first-team pitcher.

Five HPU players made the team, including Pitcher of the Year Sherise Musquiz and Player of the Year Maile Kim.

Musquiz, a senior right-hander, is a three-time all-league selection. Kim, a sophomore designated player, was named Newcomer and Freshman of the Year last year.

The Sea Warriors' Kozy Toriano (catcher/utility), Ciera Senas (outfielder) and Laine Shikuma (flex) also made the All-PacWest team.

Sierra Green (outfielder) and Amber Waracka (pitcher) represented Hilo on the squad.

SAINT LOUIS BEATS MARYKNOLL IN HOOPS

Mika Wong scored 16 points and Acen Cabral added 14 as Saint Louis beat Maryknoll, 59-51, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I boys basketball game at McCabe Gym.
