Island Pacific Academy senior Matthew Westmoreland took the first set off top-seeded Eric Johnson yesterday, then lost two tiebreakers to fall in the quarterfinals of the 2010 USTA Boys' and Girls' 18s National Open.

The scores were 1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4).

Semifinals are today and finals tomorrow, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Patsy T. Mink CORP Tennis Complex.

Westmoreland, who turned 18 last month, was seeded seventh and ranked 78th nationally.

"I just focused on every point and tried to take advantage as much as possible," Westmoreland said. "Then he started waking up."

Johnson, from San Jose, Calif., is ranked 24th nationally.

"He's a big strong guy and I can't out-hit him so I had to move him around," Westmoreland said.

Evan Song, Patrick Kawka and Jamin Ball also advanced to the boys semifinals.

Honolulu's Robin Kiyabu, seeded 14th, moved on in the consolation bracket with two wins. Reigning state high school champion Jared Spiker won his first consolation match, then lost a super tiebreaker in the second.

Sarah Lee, the top-seeded girl, was upset by fifth-seeded Jamie Pawid, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.

Jacqueline Crawford, Sylvia Li and Britney Sanders also made the girls semifinals.
