KS-Oahu baseball loses top prospect

BY Stacy Kaneshiro

Kamehameha will be without All-State catcher Keanu Carmichael this high school baseball season.

Carmichael, regarded as the state's top pro prospect in this coming draft, said last night he is attending Mililani High.

He declined to elaborate why he switched schools just as the high school baseball season has started.

Kamehameha athletic director Kanani Souza and Warriors' baseball coach Vern Ramie did not immediately return messages left by The Advertiser.

Carmichael, who signed a letter of intent to play baseball at the University of Hawai'i, said that UH coach Mike Trapasso told him the scholarship agreement is still good.

"I'm just practicing with the Mililani team," Carmichael said.

Mililani coach Mark Hirayama said Carmichael can work out to stay in baseball shape with his team. But he said Carmichael cannot play games because he transferred after the first day of practice, which was Feb. 1.

Hirayama said pro scouts have already set up dates to watch Carmichael's workouts.

Carmichael batted .410 with four home runs and 20 RBIs for Kamehameha last season and was a first-team All-State selection by The Advertiser.
