Kaunakakai fire officials said the investigations is ongoing and that no damage estimates are yet available.
The church, which was built in 1937, was scheduled to be demolished to make way for the new $3 million Blessed Damien Church, Blessed Damien Church, to be constructed in honor of Saint Damien deVeuster, the Belgian priest who ministered to Hansen's disease patients on the Kalaupapa Peninsula 120 years ago and was canonized in October.
