Driver charged in death of Big Island girl

HILO, Hawaii — A Big Island woman accused of causing a traffic accident that claimed the life of a 17-month-old girl has been indicted on eight charges, including drunken driving, manslaughter and negligent homicide.
Police said Valereen Kaleohano-Knittle’s pickup truck ran a red light in Kailua, Kona, on May 23, 2009, and crashed into a car carrying toddler Aliyah Braden. Aliyah was killed, and her 25-year-old mother, Mayvelyn Braden, was critically injured.
