250 gallons of used cooking oil spills onto highway on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

Two-hundred fifty gallons of used cooking oil spilled onto Queen Kaahumanu Highway in Kona yesterday when a strap holding the load on a flatbed truck broke.

The spill happened about 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Hina Lani Street and Kaahumanu.
A Hawaii County news release says the truck was making a right turn onto Kaahumanu when the strap broke. The container holding the oil fell and all 250 gallons were spilled.
Police redirected traffic while firefighters spread absorbent.
