Lingle and Hawaii Board of Education continue fight over teacher furloughs

HONOLULU — Gov. Linda Lingle and the state Board of Education are sparring over a proposal to curtail teacher furloughs.
Lingle on Saturday called on the board and the Department of Education to accept her plan to use $50 million in special state funds to eliminate most remaining furlough days this semester and in the next school year.
Board Chairman Garrett Toguchi said the panel asked for clarification of the plan but received no response from Lingle.
He said the governor could take her proposal directly to the teachers union.
Lingle on Monday fired back, saying state law bars her from formally proposing a plan to the union without the board’s concurrence.
She says her office never received the board’s request for more information.
