The U.S. Navy hospital ship Mercy will stop at Pearl Harbor May 8 en route to a humanitarian mission to Southeast Asia and Oceania as part of Pacific Partnership 2010.

The ship is scheduled to stop in Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Timor-Leste. Medical treatment facilities include multiple operating rooms, X-ray capabilities and more than 500 volunteer and military staff.

Two other visits will be made to Palau and Papua New Guinea by other Navy and "partner nation" ships as part of Pacific Partnership, the Navy said.

The ship visits are the fifth in a series of annual U.S. Pacific Fleet humanitarian and civic assistance missions whose goal is to strengthen regional relationships through the goodwill visits.

They also provide training for U.S. response to emergencies in the Pacific.

"This deployment offers an incredible opportunity to continue to build the relationships and capabilities that will be essential in responding to real-world disaster in the region," said Capt. Lisa Franchetti, the mission commander.

The deployment is scheduled to take place through late September.
