UH volleyball makes it close, but falls in three to Stanford in MPSF semifinals

No. 1-ranked Stanford defeated the University of Hawaii men's volleyball team, 30-24, 30-28, 33-31, in today's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation semifinals at Maples Pavilion at Stanford, Calif.

Stanford will play Cal State Northridge Saturday for the MPSF title and an automatic berth in the NCAA men's volleyball final four next week, also at Stanford.

Jonas Umlauft led No. 4 UH with 16 kills with Joshua Walker added 15 and Steven Hunt 13. Nejc Zemljak had 48 assists. UH hit .252 with Umlauft held to .116 in 43 attempts.

The No. 1-ranked Cardinal were led by Hawai'i players, Brad Lawson, Kawika Shoji and Erik Shoji.

Lawson, the league's Player of the Year from Iolani, had 18 kills, as did Evan Romero.

Kawika Shoji had 49 assists and 13 digs. Erik Shoji had six digs.

CS NORTHRIDGE ADVANCES

In the other semifinal, No. 3 Cal State Northridge defeated No. 2 Brigham Young, 26-30, 30-25, 28-30, 30-16, 15-12.

Theo Edwards led CS Northridge with 16 kills while Kevin McKniff, John Baker and Jacek Ratajczak added 15 kills apiece. McKniff ht .462 and Ratajczak .379. Matt Stork had 61 assists for CS Northridge, who hit .274.

Robb Stwell had 18 kills, Andrew Stewart 14 and Futi Tavana 10 for BYU. Reed Chilton had 52 assists for the Cougars, who hit just .165.
