WAIPI'O — Pearl City won its fourth straight O'ahu Interscholastic Association baseball championship last night, rallying past and then holding off Campbell, 4-3, to deny the Sabers their first league crown since 1995.

A crowd of about 600 — paying admission for the first time at Patsy Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park — watched the Chargers finish the OIA season a perfect 15-0 and earn the league's top seed and first-round bye for the Wally Yonamine Foundation State Championships May 5 through May 8 at Wailuku's Iron Maehara Stadium.

"Hopefully this is the year we take it all," said Pearl City senior Chace Numata, a shortstop /closer who earned his second straight save last night. "That's why we're going to still work hard and give it our all, leave it all on the field."

Numata, a hard-throwing right-hander, needed his all last night, as Campbell (10-5) loaded the bases with two outs trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh inning. Avery Marquez, who bats fifth in the Sabers' lineup, drew a 3-2 count, but Numata got him swinging to end the game.

"Chace was kind of erratic tonight, usually he's around the plate," Chargers coach Gary Nakamoto said. "That last pitch could have gone either way, so we were fortunate to win. Hat's off to Campbell, they gave us a tough game."

The Sabers took a surprising 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth, on Benny Carino's two-run double to left field. But Pearl City rallied for three runs in the sixth, scoring on Jonathan Kealoha's RBI groundout, an infield error and a wild pitch.

Numata, whose 90-mph-plus fastball was nearly untouchable in Friday night's 3-2 semifinal victory over Mililani came on in relief in the top of the seventh, but issued a leadoff walk to No. 9 batter Paul Arakaki and later walked Po'o Ka'alekahi (with one out) and Kale Ka'alekahi (with two outs) to load the bases.

"We had faced him in the regular season, so I just told our guys we know what he's got, just stick to your approach," Campbell coach Rory Pico said. "I knew (Numata) had been throwing a lot and was hoping he wouldn't be as great as he was last night."

Numata, whose fastball was clocking about 87 mph last night, said he threw more offspeed pitches against the Sabers.

"I thought I had to mix it up more," he said. "They were fouling off a lot of my fastballs."
