Warriors outlast Pepperdine in five, advance to MPSF semifinals

Hawai'i advanced to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball tournament semifinals with a thrilling 24-30, 30-24, 30-26, 22-30, 18-16 victory tonight over Pepperdine tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Hawai'i (18-10), under first-year head coach Charlie Wade, will play host and top seed Stanford Thursday, Pepperdine finished its season 17-9.

Freshman Jonas Umlauft led Hawai'i with a match-high 36 kills, while Matt Rawson was in on eight blocks.

In other first-round MPSF matches tonight, Stanford beat No. 8 UC Irvine 30-26, 28-30, 30-25, 30-27; No. 2 seed BYU defeated No. 7 UCLA 30-28, 30-26, 26-30, 30-26 and No. 3 Cal State Northridge topped No. 6 USC, 3-1 (30-17, 31-33, 33-31. 30-26). BYU and Cal State Northridge will meet in the other semifinal.
