PHILADELPHIA — Even on a soggy night, Roy Halladay made it look easy.

Halladay pitched eight strong innings in his home debut, Chase Utley hit his fifth homer in four games and the Philadelphia Phillies held on for an 8-6 victory over the Florida Marlins last night.

Halladay ended Jorge Cantu's major league-record streak of 10 games with at least one hit and one RBI, and Dan Uggla hit a solo shot for Florida.

Pitching in a steady rain, Halladay (3-0) shrugged off the conditions and allowed two runs and eight hits. He threw 100 pitches, struck out four and didn't walk a batter.

"I think you go out and do the same things," Halladay said. "There's not a lot you can do to change anything. My approach is the same."

Florida took advantage of three infield hits to score four runs off David Herndon in the ninth before Ryan Madson got the last two outs for his third save in three tries. Madson retired Cantu on a fielder's choice grounder with two runners on to end it.

Acquired from Toronto in a blockbuster deal last December, Halladay tossed a seven-hit shutout against Houston last Sunday. The former AL Cy Young winner has a 1.13 ERA in three starts.

CUBS 7, ASTROS 2

Derrek Lee hit a three-run homer and Carlos Silva pitched seven strong innings, leading host Chicago past Houston. Ryan Theriot drove in the go-ahead run for the Cubs with a seventh-inning squeeze, and Kosuke Fukudome added a sacrifice fly before Lee capped the six-run inning by hitting Jeff Fulchino's 3-2 pitch over the left-field wall. Silva (1-0) allowed five hits, no walks and no earned runs.

CARDINALS 4, METS 3

Felipe Lopez hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to back Chris Carpenter's sterling outing, and host St. Louis beat New York. The Mets led 1-0 on the strength of an unearned run and stingy work from Oliver Perez before Lopez hit his fifth career grand slam off Raul Valdes. Carpenter (2-0) struck out 10 in seven innings and allowed an unearned run on four hits.

PADRES 6, DIAMONDBACKS 3:

Chase Headley hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to lift host San Diego over Arizona. Headley drove a 1-1 pitch from Juan Gutierrez (0-1) down the right-field line for his first home run of the season. The Padres scored the tying run earlier in the inning on David Eckstein's RBI double.

PIRATES 4, REDS 3

Lastings Milledge singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as host Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati Reds after blowing a late three-run lead. Andrew McCutchen singled with two outs and stole second base, making him 6 for 6 in steal attempts. Milledge then laced a single up the middle off Nick Masset (2-1).

DODGERS 10, GIANTS 8

Andre Ethier hit his first grand slam while homering in his first two at-bats, leading host Los Angeles over San Francisco. The Dodgers' Matt Kemp tied a career best by homering in his fourth straight game.

NATIONALS 5, BREWERS 3

Adam Kennedy's two-run single in the eighth inning keyed a three-run rally as host Washington topped Milwaukee. Brian Bruney (1-0), who allowed an unearned run in the top of the eighth to give Milwaukee a temporary 3-2 lead, was the winner.

BRAVES 9, ROCKIES 5

Jason Heyward and Melky Cabrera each had two hits during a seven-run second inning, and host Atlanta won its third straight. Eric Hinske drove in three runs and Chipper Jones homered for the Braves.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

ANGELS 7, BLUE JAYS 5

Kendry Morales homered and Jered Weaver continued his mastery over visiting Toronto with seven strong innings. Weaver (2-0) allowed two runs and five hits in seven-plus innings. He walked none and struck out eight. He improved to 6-1 with a 2.93 ERA in seven career starts against the Blue Jays.

INDIANS 6, WHITE SOX 2

Mitch Talbot pitched a complete game for his first career win and Luis Valbuena hit a two-run homer for host Cleveland. Talbot (1-0) retired 12 in a row after Paul Konerko snapped an 0-for-12 slump with his fourth homer leading off the second. The right-hander gave up six hits and struck out two without walking a batter.

YANKEES 5, RANGERS 1, 6 INNINGS, RAIN

CC Sabathia struck out nine in another dominant performance for host New York. Sabathia (2-0) allowed three hits and walked none in his first complete game of the season. He retired 17 of the last 19 batters he faced after Josh Hamilton's one-out double in the first, including six consecutive strikeouts.

MARINERS 11, TIGERS 3

Felix Hernandez (1-0) struck out nine while allowing just four hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings for host Seattle. Franklin Gutierrez had three hits and three RBIs, and Jose Lopez drove in two as the Mariners improved to 28-9 with King Felix starting since the beginning of 2009.

RAYS 1, RED SOX 1, SUSPENDED

The game between visiting Tampa Bay and Boston was suspended because of rain with the score tied 1-1 after 8 1/2 innings. It was scheduled to resume before tonight's scheduled game from the point it was suspended. Rain was forecast for all day today.

ATHLETICS 4, ORIOLES 2

Dallas Braden pitched seven solid innings, Gabe Gross had three hits and host Oakland beat Baltimore. Braden (2-0) struck out four and walked one in his most impressive outing of the season.

TWINS 10, ROYALS 3

Zack Greinke walked five in just five innings, getting out-pitched by Scott Baker in visiting Kansas City's loss to Minnesota. Greinke (0-2) gave up six hits and four runs — two earned — with five strikeouts. Baker (2-1) gave up two runs and seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.

NOTES

Giants: San Francisco center fielder Aaron Rowand left last night's game against the Dodgers in the fifth inning after getting hit in the helmet by a pitch from Vicente Padilla.

Rowand was struck on the bill of the helmet. Rowand spent a few minutes on his knees behind home plate after manager Bruce Bochy and a team trainer rushed out of the dugout. Rowand left the field under his own power and received a round of applause by the Dodgers crowd.

Dodgers: Slugger Manny Ramirez left last night's game against San Francisco after three innings because of tightness in his right calf.

Ramirez batted twice, grounding out both times. He is hitting .355 through his first nine games with a homer and eight RBIs.
