Kanekoa earns UH basketball award

Junior point guard Keisha Kanekoa was presented the Ah Chew Goo Award last night at the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team banquet.

The award is given to the team's most inspirational player.

Kanekoa led the Rainbow Wahine in scoring (11.2 points per game), assists, field goals made, free throws made and steals.

All players were presented gifts during ceremonies at the Ala Moana Hotel's Hibiscus Ballroom.

Hawai'i earned a berth in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament and finished 10-20 under first-year coach Dana Takahara-Dias.

GOLF

KONO WINS TOURNEY

Stephanie Kono sank a 50-foot birdie putt on the final hole, rallying top-ranked UCLA to a one-stroke victory and earning medalist honors at the PING/Arizona State Invitational yesterday in Tempe, Ariz.

Kono, a Punahou graduate and All-America sophomore, closed with a 6-under-par 66 for a 54-hole total of 9-under 207 to beat USC's Jennifer Song by a stroke. Kono made seven birdies and one bogey to win her third collegiate tournament.

Denver's Kimberly Kim, a former Big Island resident, finished fifth at 69—210. Second-round leader Kristina Merkle, a Moanalua High alum playing for Tulsa, slipped to 11th with 77—214.

UCLA overcame a 12-stroke deficit to finish at 9-under 279, a shot ahead of host Arizona State.

SURFING

SALLAS, DAWSON THIRD

Hawai'i surfers Kai Sallas and Leah Dawson placed third in their respective divisions at the Costa Rica PLA Pro longboard surfing contest yesterday.

The final day of the contest was completed in 2- to 4-foot waves at Boca Barranca, Puntarenas, Costa Rica.

Sallas placed third in the men's division and received $1,700. California's Cole Robbins placed first.

Dawson placed third in the women's division and received $600. California's Jennifer Smith won the women's final.

WATER POLO

STANFORD TOPS UH

Kelly Eaton scored four goals and Annika Dries three as No. 2 Stanford beat No. 5 Hawai'i, 10-6, yesterday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

The Cardinal improved to 20-1 overall and 5-0 in the MPSF by halting UH's nine-game winning streak.

Monika Eggens and Ryan Hanson-Swaner each scored two goals for the Rainbow Wahine (15-7, 3-3), who host San Jose State Saturday on Senior Night, starting at 7.
