21 arrested March 29-April 4 on drunken-driving charges
Big Island police arrested 21 motorists for drunken driving during the week of March 29-April 4, the Hawai'i Tribune-Herald reported.
Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 10; Kona, 9; Puna and South Kohala, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 402 DUI arrests compared with 340 during the same period last year, an increase of 18.2 percent.
There have been 347 major accidents this year compared with 446 during the same period last year, a decrease of 22.2 percent.
So far this year, there have been eight traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with five during the same period last year, an increase of 60 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
