U.S. Census workers and volunteers were at the intersection of Likelike Highway and School Street this morning, holding signs and urging residents to fill out and return their Census forms.

About two dozen people held signs at all four corners of the intersection. A banner asked: "Has Your Ohana Been Counted?"

Sign-holding will resume during the afternoon rush hour.

Roberta Wong Murray, a Census media specialist, said Kalihi was targeted for the campaign because it has the lowest response rate on Oahu.

Wong said that as of yesterday, Kalihi had a 24 percent response rate. That compares with 64 percent for Honolulu as a whole and 58 percent for the state.

Wong said the sign-holders have received positive reaction.

She said as pedestrians pass, "we ask if they've filled out their forms. Some say yes, some are confused and wonder if they can pick up the forms at Longs.

"We tell them it's coming in the mail."
