Man shot self, drugs played role, medical examiner says

Advertiser Staff

The city medical examiner has concluded that a 33-year-old Wai'anae man whose body was found Friday morning along with that of a woman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Methamphetamine use was also deemed a significant factor in the death of Tusigafa "Kepi" Matua.

As of yesterday morning, the medical examiner had not released the name of the woman whose body was found next to Matua's, but friends earlier identified her as Tanya Vagai, 39, the victim of an apparent murder-suicide.

The two were found dead by Vagai's mother, who had gone to Pōka'i Bay Beach Cabanas to check on her daughter after she failed to show up for work.

A handgun was found in the living room, police said.
