Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry conducting drive today at state Capitol

Advertiser Staff

The Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry will conduct a drive today at the state Capitol in hopes of finding a match for a third-grader at Manoa Elementary School.

Mitchel Ganeku has been diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a condition in which a person's bone marrow fails to produce enough new blood cells. The condition causes fatigue and a higher risk of infection and uncontrolled bleeding.

The drive will be held from noon to 4 p.m. in Room 437.

The process takes about 10 minutes and involves a small mouth cheek swab sample. People who register must be between the ages of 18 and 60 and meet health guidelines.

For more information, call the Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry at 547-6154 or the office of state Rep. John Mizuno at 586-6050.
