Peppa's cleared to reopen, DOH says

The state Health Department confirmed yesterday that it had reinstated the food permit for Peppa's Korean BBQ.

The restaurant reopened Friday after being shut down the day before when health inspectors determined that four cases of E. coli were connected to the eatery.

The owners of Peppa's, at 1240 S. King St. in Honolulu, had agreed to the shutdown, the department said.

On Friday, a state holiday, Health Department officials could not be reached to confirm that the restaurant had been given permission to resume operations.

Yesterday, the department said Peppa's had completed the required corrective actions under the supervision of the department's Sanitation Branch, and was indeed cleared to reopen early Friday. The actions included disinfecting surfaces that come into contact with food , walls and floors; discarding food that was not in sealed containers or containers that could be disinfected; providing accurate thermometers and assuring proper food temperatures; ensuring adequate hand washing facilities and practices, and completing documented food safety training, the department said.

The restaurant manager will complete the DOH's Food Certification Workshop on Monday and Tuesday, the Health Department said.

On Friday, Patrick Kang, manager of the South King Street Peppa's, said business slowed dramatically after media coverage of the shutdown. He said he hoped customers would return now.
