Sandler movie casts Hapa, other local performers

Hapa has a film date this month with the Adam Sandler-Jennifer Aniston flick "Just Go With It," shooting on Maui.

"Director Dennis Dugan called me and he has hired Hapa for a week in late April," said Barry Flanagan, who's out on tour. "He said he was a big fan of the group since the first CD in 1993."

Flanagan and Hapa's Nathan Aweau will be joined by Ledward Ka'apana and Ernie Cruz Jr. to portray "a hip Hawaiian house band in a restaurant," said Flanagan. Sandler, Aniston and co-stars Dave Matthews and Nicole Kidman are in this segment — such a dream jam. ...

Fourteen Tihati Productions troupers on Maui also will figure in a three-day shoot for a lū'au scene for Sandler and crew. Nine dancers, including four fire-dance guys, and five musicians/drummers, add up great exposure for these cultural ambassadors. ...

MORE HAPA-NINGS: At a gig at Yoshi's in San Francisco last week, Hapa encountered a woman in a car while the group was unloading gear. "Are you Hapa?" she shouted. "I have a story to tell you." After the matinee performance, the woman showed up and grabbed Flanagan while he was signing CDs, exclaiming: "I wanted you to know you saved my life; I was in a car accident last month and was in a coma. And my children played your music to me over and over and I came out of it last week — and I am here to say thanks." A Hapa-ning to remember. ...

WAY TO GO: Karen Hironaga, who was the mother of Jing-Mei in Diamond Head Theatre's recent "Joy Luck Club," has landed a small role in "The Descendants," the film starring George Clooney that's lensing here. Director Alexander Payne saw "Joy Luck Club" with casting agent John Jackson, resulting in the hiring. Blossom Hoffman, also in the show, was tapped to be a legal secretary in the Clooney character's law office. ...

No sooner than we bemoaned the lack of Clooney sightings after hours, Ben Miller e-mailed to say Clooney and his girlfriend (believed to be Elisabetta Canalis, the model and actress accompanying him at this year's Oscars) shared a booth at Yanagi Sushi with a pair of Hollywood types on a recent Saturday night. People magazine's former Sexiest Man Alive was smiling beneath his baseball cap. ...

HITHER 'N' YON: Aerosmith's Steven Tyler shares a birthday with Prince Kūhiō. So he revealed when he and girlfriend Erin Brady spent part of March 26 shopping at Upcountry Harvest, Susan Locke's uber-eclectic Kula shop. ...

NHL legend Joe Sakic of the Colorado Avalanche enjoyed dinner with his family at Cheeseburger Wailea. His wrist shot is legendary — he's twice scored 50 goals and earned at least 100 points over six seasons. ...

Bruno Mars, a Roosevelt grad, has a hit brewing in the hip-hop "Nothin' on You." For a video of "The Adventures of Bobby Ray" featuring Mars' vocal, go to www.myspace.com/brunosongs.
