The Kaneohe-based Marine who died in his barracks room Tuesday was identified Wednesday as Lance Cpl. Marc L. Plotts of Fredericksburg, Va.

The public affairs office at Marine Corps Base Hawaii said the Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the circumstances of Plotts' death.

Plotts was pronounced dead in his barracks after military police responded to a 911 call.

The Marines said Plotts enlisted in October 2007. He joined 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment on March 17, 2008 and was assigned to Weapons Company as a mortarman. His decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Iraqi Campaign Medal.
