Schools will cancel or reschedule events

 • Hawaii teachers union officials stick by Friday-furloughs decision

Will the DOE A-Plus Program be available on furlough days?

No. Private providers may apply to use the facilities and run their own programs at parent expense on furlough days. Principals will continue to decide whether to approve such requests at their schools.

What will happen with the monthly DOE A-Plus fee?

The fee will be adjusted to take into account the furlough days.

Will student transportation fees be adjusted for furlough days?

Yes. The DOE's Student Transportation section is working on a furlough adjustment plan.

The quarterly fee will be reduced.

Fee adjustment information for those who have purchased annual passes will be sent to schools by December.

What choices do schools have in regard to waiver days or planning/ collaboration days?

Waiver days or planning/collaboration days that would fall on furlough days will be either:

• Rescheduled (including any speakers or workshops).

• Waived. Schools must submit a request to the state Board of Education to cancel one of those days, in consultation with the union.

Can schools still conduct after-school student activities on furlough days?

Student activities (dances, proms, plays, conferences) planned by schools off-campus or on-campus after 3 p.m. on furlough days should be rescheduled to Thursdays (Thursday is the new "Friday"), Saturdays or another day, if possible.

If the activity can't be rescheduled, it will be canceled unless the principal approves it to proceed.

Furloughed DOE employees who volunteer to participate in the activity will be doing so during nonwork hours.

Volunteer parents and guardians may continue to chaperone authorized student activities.

What about statewide or districtwide student activities, such as conferences or competitions, scheduled on furlough days?

If such events involve students and DOE employees on furlough days, they should be rescheduled to Thursdays, Saturdays or another day, if possible.

If the activity can't be rescheduled, it will be either canceled or recommended to proceed by an administrator.

Participation exceptions for furloughed DOE employees may be granted by the superintendent on a case-by-case basis and must be approved before the activity date.

Volunteer parents and guardians may continue to chaperone authorized student activities.

What about out-of-state and in-state trips?

If such trips involve students and DOE employees on furlough days, they should be rescheduled.

If the activity can't be rescheduled, the trip is to be canceled unless an administrator or principal recommends that it proceed.

Participation exceptions for furloughed DOE employees may be granted by the superintendent on a case-by-case basis and must be approved before the activity date.
