UH shoots down Detroit-Mercy, 1-0

In its first game back after nearly three weeks away, the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team blanked Detroit-Mercy, 1-0, in the OHANA Hotels and Resorts Shootout last night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium in front of 237.

The teams meet again tomorrow at 7 p.m. at WPSS in Hawai'i's (3-6-1) last non-conference game before the Western Athletic Conference season opens next week.

Senior forward Britta Bourne broke through in the 68th minute after numerous chances by the Rainbow Wahine. At that point it was Hawai'i's 12th shot on goal, compared to none by Detroit-Mercy (2-6-1), which was playing at 1 a.m. its time after arriving Wednesday.

"(The shots) are on goal and we just have to figure it out. It is one of those things you just have to get done," Bourne said. "We have to look up and find the corners and not the keeper. Or the post."

Bourne received a long ball up the middle of the field that was flicked on by senior forward Ambree Ako. Bourne beat a Titan defender for the open look that resulted in her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

While Hawai'i appeared to be connecting better and possessing the ball, Rainbow Wahine coach Pinsoom Tenzing was unhappy with the lack of scoring.

"They are playing better, but we are missing too many goals," said Tenzing, who pointed to his team's 15 shots on goal with only one score. "That's not good enough. We should be doing better. I think they are doing much better than when we started off but we should have scored five goals today."

The Rainbow Wahine started the game strong, threatening in a variety of ways, from midfielder Mari Punzal taking the ball up the field herself and directing a cross from midfielder Kristyn Shapka to forward Bourne for a point-blank shot.

"It feels smooth, and we're connecting with each other and we know where we're running to," Bourne said. "It's a lot easier to find each other.

"We feel a lot more confident, too. Now we just have to put those goals in."

The Shapka-to-Bourne connection worked the entire evening, with two other chances right in front of the goal. Bourne headed to the goalkeeper on one chance, and the other she just missed after the ball glanced off her leg and out of play.

Hawai'i, which took a 7-0 shots-on-goal advantage into halftime, continued in the second.

Ten minutes into the second half, Punzal had a breakaway but her shot hit the crossbar. Bourne tried to follow, but her shot went wide left.

Note: UH senior defender Shauna Musser went down with an apparent right hamstring injury with three minutes left in the first half. Musser just gained a starting position after midfielder Rachel Domingo was lost for the season from a knee injury.
