Roosevelt High graduate Clarissa Chun, a 2008 world champion, lost in the second round yesterday at the World Wrestling Championships in Herning, Denmark.

Chun, competing with an injured shoulder in the 106-pound division, dropped a three-period decision to 17-year-old North Korean Sim Hyang So.

Chun lost the first period, 4-0, then fought back in the second, firing in on a leg attack to score a takedown with two seconds left and send the bout to a third period.

Neither wrestler was able to score in the third period and the match went to the ball draw. So won the draw and quickly finished for a takedown to win the match.

"I thought I was ready to go, regardless of what injury I had," said Chun, who placed fifth in the 2008 Olympics. "I kept fighting. I didn't want to lose. I definitely dropped the ball in the third period. I got too comfortable. I should have attacked her like I was losing. I should have come after her and not let it go (to the ball draw)."

So reached the semifinals, but lost to world champion Iorisa Oorzhak of Russia. That knocked Chun out of the event since So did not reach the finals. Chun finished ninth in the standings.

HPU BEATS CU

Kelly Balanay had 23 kills and Kyra Pelayo added 27 digs as Hawai'i Pacific beat Chaminade, 25-16, 20-25, 28-30, 25-18, 15-10, last night in a Pacific West Conference match at McCabe Gym.

Mariana Souza added 10 kills and 12 digs for the Sea Warriors (4-6, 1-0). Courtney Lorusso had 18 kills and 10 digs, and Chauntelle Maduli added 29 digs for the Silverswords (1-10, 0-2).

FORRESTER TOPS WAC

University of Hawai'i runner Jessica Forrester was named the Western Athletic Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week after capturing the Big Wave Invitational title over the weekend.

Forrester, a senior from Brandon, Fla., won the 4-kilometer race held at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course. She finished in 15 minutes, 5.44 seconds to help the Rainbow Wahine place second.

Meanwhile, Hawai'i Pacific senior Quinn Horochuk, who placed third at the Big Wave Invitational, was selected the Pacific West Conference Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week.

Horochuk finished in 15:38.12.

BASKETBALL

WAC ON ESPN

The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team will tip off the Western Athletic Conference's schedule of games televised by ESPN this season when it plays Northern Colorado at Stan Sheriff Center on Nov. 16.

The game will be shown nationwide on ESPN2 at 11 p.m. Hawai'i time as part of ESPN's College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon. It is Hawai'i's only scheduled appearance on ESPN's lineup of WAC games, with the possible exception of the WAC tournament in March.

A total of 20 WAC games will be broadcast. Six regular season games will be shown on ESPN2, six on ESPNU and five on ESPN Regional Television (ERT). The WAC tournament championship game and a minimum of one semifinal will also be shown on ESPN2, while ESPNU will broadcast a minimum of one quarterfinal game.

Games determined by ESPN's BracketBuster could increase the number of WAC games broadcast by ESPN.
