City wins extension on landfill, but only to 2012

The city today was granted an expansion and three-year extension of its Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill but was told it won’t get any extensions beyond 2012.

Under the conditions of the extension, the city would be required to shut down the controversial landfill by 2012 to all trash except ash and residue not disposable at the city’s H-Power waste-to-energy facility.

The city had asked for a 15-year extension while the city Planning Commission recommended an open-ended extension.

Opponents, including the Ko Olina Community Association, asked that the landfill be allowed to shut down on Nov. as allowed in the existing permit.
