Lifeguards urge caution as large northwest swell approaches

Advertiser Staff

In anticipation of a large northwest swell that is expected to arrive tomorrow, city lifeguards are urging beachgoers to practice caution.

The National Weather Service is predicting that very large surf generated from former Typhoon Choi-Wan will peak on Friday before slowly diminishing Saturday into Sunday.
Surf in the 15-foot advisory threshold range along north shores and the 12-foot advisory threshold range on west shores is possible.
Residents and visitors are being encouraged to take the necessary precautions to protect life and property.
“This swell is expected to be the first significant one of the North Shore surf season so we are reminding everyone to take the necessary safety precautions,” said Bryan Cheplic, Emergency Services Department spokesman.
Lifeguards suggest beachgoers to:
— Always swim at a beach with a lifeguard.
— Consult with a lifeguard regarding conditions before entering the water.
— Heed all warning signs.
— Never swim alone.
— Alert a lifeguard or dial 911 if they see someone in distress.
For public information regarding ocean conditions, advisories, and warnings, the Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division provides a recorded report which can be accessed 24 hours a day at 922-3888, ext. 51.
