Alika Smith, an all-around star athlete at Kalaheo High and a basketball standout at University of Hawaii, has been named new Punahou boys basketball coach.
Smith replaces Dan Hale, who coached his alma mater for three years before moving to Virginia.
Smith was an all-state basketball player and baseball at Kalaheo High School. He later teammed with Anthony Carter at UH to form what was dubbed the "Dynamic Duo" that led the Rainbows to 21-8 and 21-9 records during the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons.
Smith was second team all-Western Athletic Conference in his final two years at UH.
Smith also was an assistant coach under Riley Wallace at UH from 2005 to 2007.
