Governors rout Tigers

By Wes Nakama

The Farrington High School football team allowed coach Randall Okimoto to get home from work early on his second day as a new father last night, racing past McKinley, 41-7, at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

The Governors, tied for No. 5 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red Conference Eastern Division.

The Tigers fell to 2-2, 1-1.

Okimoto and his wife, Melanie, welcomed their first child, Mayah, on Friday.

"I didn't have much sleep this week," Okimoto said.

Farrington took out all worry about last night's outcome early, scoring on its fourth play from scrimmage when running back Scotland Smith zig-zagged his way to a 35-yard touchdown run.

Ekolu Kaina's extra point made it 7-0 just 118 seconds into the game.

The Govs made it 14-0 less than two minutes later, after Vaughn Tomas returned an interception 33 yards for a score.

McKinley lost a fumble on its first play after the ensuing kickoff, with Farrington's VJ Fehoko recovering on the Tigers' 40. Five plays later, Harry Tuimaseve scored on an 8-yard run to help put the Govs up, 21-0, midway through the first quarter.

McKinley, which was coming off a 23-21 victory over Kailua, turned the ball over on six of its seven first-half possessions last night.

"We looked like we were playing our first game," Tigers coach Bobby Grey said. "A lot of it was self-inflicted, we were killing ourselves. But give (Farrington) credit, too. They played good fundamental football on both sides."

The Governors took a 24-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter, a 35-yard field goal by Kaina. They went up, 31-0, after Siaosi Faleunga's 2-yard touchdown run with 3:08 remaining in the half.

On McKinley's next series, Alvin Fa'amausili blocked a punt and the ball rolled out of the end zone, making it 33-0. And Farrington scored two plays after the ensuing free kick, on Jared Hakuole's 8-yard TD pass to Sammy Park, giving the Govs a 39-0 halftime lead.

The second half was played under a running clock.

Farrington out-gained McKinley, 309 yards to 12, in the first half.

The Governors, however, also had an interception and one lost fumble and finished the game with 13 penalties for 153 yards, including one player ejection.

"At times, it was real sloppy," Okimoto said. "We need to learn to stay mentally focused." Farrington (5-0, 3-0) 21 18 2 0 — 41.
