The man whose body was found Wednesday in a wooded area off the Onomea scenic area on the Big Island has been identified as 39-year-old Mountain View resident Jason Adams, who was reported missing on Sept. 4.
Big Island police have opened a murder investigation.
An autopsy performed yesterday determined that Adams died from a brain injury due to a skull fracture. Preliminary results did not yield the manner of death, however investigators yesterday were seeking the anonymous individual who called Crime Stoppers to report hearing gunshots fired in the area.
Adams was last seen driving to Hilo in his 2000 silver Nissan Frontier pickup truck. Police found the truck last Saturday on the Onomea road with its passenger-side window damaged. Adams' body was discovered Wednesday less than a quarter mile from the truck.
Two days before he disappeared, Adams was granted a temporary restraining order against his estranged wife, Sarah Iverson, the Hawaiçi Tribune Herald reported.
Police are asking that anyone with information about the case call Capt. Randall Medeiros at 961-2251 or the Hawaiçi Police Department's non-emergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
