WAIPAHU — Mililani receivers Hassan Richardson and Taz Stevenson flashed some athleticism last night to lift the fourth-ranked Trojans to a 14-0 victory over Waipahu.

Mililani remained undefeated and improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red West Division. Waipahu fell to 2-2 and 0-2 in front of about 1,000 fans at Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex.

"It was a sloppy game on the offensive side of the ball and right now our defense keeps saving us," Trojans head coach Darnell Arceneaux said. "We didn't want to overlook Waipahu because, you talk about trap games, this was a big one right here and Waipahu came out and played really hard."

The Marauders were without fullback Victor Moananu and played much of the game with linebacker Jacob Ioane lined up behind quarterback Joshua Lacar.

The Marauders rushed for 137 yards out of their triple-option attack, but Lacar was harassed all night by a relentless Mililani defense and he finished just 1-of-10 for 15 yards with three interceptions. Waipahu also lost one of its four fumbles and committed 10 penalties for 71 yards.

"We had opportunities and didn't capitalize on them — I thought that told the story of the game," Waipahu head coach Sean Saturnio said. "We put together some good drives, but got some untimely penalties and that pretty much was the story."

Mililani wasted little time getting on the board, marching 65 yards on seven plays on its opening drive.

Quarterback Trent McKinney found Richardson in the back of the end zone for a 6-yard score. Richardson used all of his 6-foot-5 frame to lay out and snag the pass. Reid Watanabe kicked the PAT to put Mililani ahead 7-0 with 9:31 left in the first quarter.

"I just threw it up hoping he would get it, but I didn't think he was going to," McKinney said of Richardson's TD grab. "He made an athletic play."

Early in the second quarter, Stevenson fielded a punt, raced down the right sideline and cut back to the left for a 59-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

"Taz did a great job on that punt — that return was just outstanding, not a lot of guys could do anything against that," Saturnio said.

Waipahu put together an 11-play drive late in the second half, but it stalled at the Mililani 20 and Brysen Kaseli's 37-yard field goal try was wide left.
