MILWAUKEE — Matt Cain bullied his way through the Brewers for seven innings. Brian Wilson simply overpowered them.

Cain outpitched Yovani Gallardo for his first win in more than six weeks and Wilson earned a five-out save, lifting the San Francisco Giants over the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-2, yesterday.

Cain (13-4) scattered four hits and pitched into the eighth inning, matching his career high for wins after going seven starts without one.

"He's bull strong," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

Juan Uribe homered to spark a two-run rally in the fourth and San Francisco won for the sixth time in eight games. The Giants remained one game behind Colorado for the NL wild card.

"You can see the end of the regular season but we're shooting for, obviously, the playoffs," Cain said.

After Jeremy Affeldt got an out, Wilson got the final five for his 34th save, reaching as high as 102 mph on the stadium radar gun.

Gallardo (12-11) allowed three runs in six innings.

ASTROS 5, PHILLIES 4:

Kaz Matsui's two-run single off Brad Lidge with two outs in the bottom of the ninth lifted host Houston. With one out, Geoff Blum walked and Chris Coste singled before Jason Michaels walked to load the bases. After Michael Bourn grounded into a force play at the plate, Matsui singled off Lidge (0-7).

REDS 3, BRAVES 1:

Joey Votto hit a two-run homer, Kip Wells pitched six innings of one-hit ball and visiting Cincinnati beat Atlanta. Wells (1-3), who had not won since April 17, 2008, when he was with Colorado, allowed only a single to Garret Anderson in the second inning.

DODGERS 7, PADRES 4:

Andre Ethier homered and doubled in a run to help Randy Wolf get his 100th major league victory and host Los Angeles beat San Diego Padres. Wolf (10-6) allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings, striking out five with no walks.

CARDINALS 2, PIRATES 1:

Albert Pujols led off the 10th inning with his second career pinch-hit home run as visiting St. Louis beat Pittsburgh. Pujols hit a 1-2 pitch from Matt Capps (3-8) far beyond the center-field wall for his major league-best 44th homer.

CUBS 5, METS 3:

Derrek Lee homered twice and drove in three runs for visiting Chicago. Rich Harden (9-8) struck out 10, all swinging, in five innings and Aramis Ramirez also had a two-run homer for Chicago.

ROCKIES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 1:

Jose Contreras pitched 6 2/3 solid innings to lead host Colorado over Arizona. Contreras (1-0) was acquired Monday from the Chicago White Sox. Seth Smith homered and scored three runs for Colorado.

MARLINS 9, NATIONALS 5:

Hanley Ramirez homered, Josh Johnson earned his 14th win and visiting Florida handed Washington its season-high eighth consecutive loss. Johnson (14-4) allowed two hits over five innings.
