NFL: 49ers’ final cutdown ousts RB Sheets

Undrafted rookie Kory Sheets, who scored three of the 49ers’ seven preseason touchdowns, was among the final cuts Saturday.

“Certainly, he did some nice things,” coach Mike Singletary said of the running back from Purdue. “In putting our roster together and going forward, we wanted the best 53.”
Other notable cuts included tackle Alex Boone, tight end Bear Pascoe, cornerback Eric Green and receiver Dominique Zeigler.
Pascoe, the sixth-round pick, was the only member of the 49ers draft class released Saturday. (First-round pick Michael Crabtree is unsigned and does not count against the roster limit).
In releasing both Pascoe and Joe Jon Finley, the 49ers kept just two tight ends. That leaves Singletary to consider using an offensive lineman in the role of blocking tight end if necessary. More likely, the 49ers will keep an eye on the waiver wire for a more polished tight end.
In addressing the Pascoe cut, Singletary said the rookie failed to adjust to the speed at the NFL level. “Coming out of Fresno State, I don’t know if he was used to guys who were that big and that fast,” the coach said.
Boone was one of five offensive linemen to get the ax, joining Jacob Bender, Kyle Howard, Matt Spanos and Joe Toledo. As with the tight end situation, the 49ers are expected to keep an eye on the waiver wire as they look for a veteran replacement for recently retired tackle Marvel Smith.
On the flip side of the painful cuts, the roster announcement marked a thrilling day for Diyral Briggs. An undrafted linebacker from Bowling Green, the linebacker’s steady play punched his NFL ticket.
Briggs, 6-4, 230 pounds, distinguished himself on the practice field and in the four preseason games. Fellow linebackers Patrick Willis and Takeo Spikes each singled out Briggs when asked during training camp to name the player who impressed them most.
Singletary said: “He’s young. He has the talent. Going forward, we want to see him develop. He’s still raw, we just have to work with him.”
Another player who wound up on the safe side of the roster was receiver Jason Hill, who thought he was going to get cut. Late Friday night, Hill grumbled about his lack of playing time and told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, “maybe the coaches don’t like me or something.”
As it turned out, the coaches just didn’t need to see much. Singletary said of Hill: “When every he has the opportunity, he’s stepped up and made plays.”
Besides Hill, the rest of the six-man receiving corps is Isaac Bruce, Arnaz Battle, Josh Morgan, Micheal Spurlock and Brandon Jones.
Spurlock is a mild surprise, but Singletary said the receiver’s versatility and value as a special teamer proved to be a big factor.
The 49ers kept both seventh-round draft picks out of LSU: defensive lineman Ricky Jean-Francois and safety Curtis Taylor.
Of Jean-Francois, Singletary said: “He’s a big body that’s talented. He has a really good work ethic.”
Of the 6-2, 209-pound Taylor, the coach said: “When you see a guy that big, you wonder if he can play. But he has nice range, good speed and has become more physical. That’s been good to see.”
