SEE ANCIENT HEIAU AT BOTANICAL GARDEN

The Kahanu Garden in Häna, Maui, one of Hawaii's two national botanical gardens, is notable for being home to Hale O Piilani, the biggest heiau in the Pacific region. Nine football fields long and four stories high, it was built by descendants of Piilani, who was key to uniting Maui. Archaeologists found the heiau was built in the 12th century and completed in the 16th century during Piilani's rule. The massive structure was restored in the 1990s by Bishop Museum and local families who volunteered their time to excavate and clean the site. The nonprofit garden is beautiful. It's also home to a variety of Polynesian plants.

'MANTRACKER' SEEKS ISLE PARTICIPANTS

Hawaii residents interested in trying to evade TV's "Mantracker" for 36 hours can apply to be on the Discovery Science show when it films on the Big Island in December.

The Canadian reality show arms "prey" with a map, a compass, a 1.5-mile headstart and a predetermined destination only they know, while Mantracker uses expert forensic equipment and a local guide to try to intercept them as they attempt to travel nearly 25 miles in 36 hours.
