Coast Guard plane will practice oil response technique off Barbers Point

Advertiser Staff

A U.S. Coast Guard C-130 air crew is scheduled to practice an oil spill response technique today with low-altitude passes off Barbers Point.

The Coast Guard said the air crew will conduct three separate flights today from Air Station Barbers Point to a location approximately three miles from shore. The air crew will drop only water, but the missions are to simulate an oil spill response technique which involves dispersal of a chemical agent.
On an actual oil slick, the dispersant would break down the oil and minimize a potential impact to the shoreline.
The Coast Guard will advise mariners in the area of the drill and has coordinated with the Honolulu Fire Department as well to keep the public informed.
