WAHIAWA — No. 4 Leilehua rallied with 19 second-half points to hold off Kailua, 29-13, in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference Tournament quarterfinal last night.
A crowd of about 2,000 at Hugh Yoshida Stadium saw the Mules improve to 7-2.
Leilehua will play the winner of tonight's quarterfinal between Kapolei and Farrington next Friday at Aloha Stadium. The Surfriders ended their season at 4-6.
Kailua led 13-10 at the half before Leilehua went ahead on a 1-yard Austin Schmidt touchdown run in the third quarter. The Mules padded their lead on a 10-yard TD pass from Andrew Manley to CJ Bailey in the fourth and sealed it with a 7-yard Manley run in the final minutes.
A booming 61-yard punt by Kailua's Eric Lum pinned the Mules inside their 10-yard line on their first drive of the game.
After a 3-yard loss on first down, Carlos Marshall picked up 9 yards on second down before Manley's first interception of the night was returned by Kailua's Corey Lau 43 yards to the Mules' 1.
Chevrolet Mikaele scored on the next play on a quarterback sneak to open the scoring with 8:38 left in the first quarter. Lum kicked the PAT to make it 7-0.
The Mules regrouped on their ensuing drive. Marshall carried five times, including his 17-yard touchdown run with 7:10 left in the first. Timothy Momiyama's extra point tied it at 7.
Early in the second quarter, Leilehua's Ryan Pasoquen picked off Mikaele to give his team possession at midfield. The Mules were able to move the ball down to the Kailua 4-yard line, but a delay of game on third-and-goal pushed them back to the Surfriders' 9. Manley's third-down pass fell incomplete and Leilehua settled for a 26-yard field goal by Momiyama to pull ahead 10-7 with 5:41 until halftime.
Lau converted on a pivotal third-and-10 for the Kailua offense with a 33-yard throw-short, run-long screen pass from Mikaele to set-up a 21-yard TD pass from Mikaele to Dustin Kalai two plays later. Kalai, a junior receiver, got behind a pair of Mules' defenders and Mikaele found him in the back of the end zone to give the Surfriders a 13-10 halftime lead. The extra point was missed.
In the third quarter, Leilehua's DaQuan Wyatt recovered a muffed punt by the Surfriders at the Kailua 40. Manley converted on two four-down passes to keep the drive alive, resulting in Schmidt's 1-yard TD run. The PAT was no good but Leilehua led, 16-13, with 2:40 left in the third.
