Roy Powers of Kauai advanced to the second round of the Rip Curl Pro Search men's contest yesterday.

The first round of the contest was completed in 4- to 5-foot waves at Lagido, Portugal.

Powers defeated Australia's Dayyan Neve, 14.17-11.0, in the first round.

Fellow Kauai surfer Dustin Barca was a hard-luck loser in the first round. Australia's Drew Courtney defeated Barca, 17.17-16.7.

Barca's score of 16.7 would have won any other heat in the first round.

Fred Patacchia Jr. of Oahu's North Shore received a bye into the second round.

The contest is the ninth of 10 stops on the 2009 ASP World Tour.

TENNIS

UH PAIR ADVANCES IN REGIONAL TOURNEY

University of Hawaii sophomore Alyssa Nafarette and freshman Mari Tadaki defeated Justine Perl and Maja Sujica of San Diego, 9-8 (7), yesterday at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional Championships in San Diego.

They weren't as successful in singles. Top-seeded Kelsy McKenna of Arizona State beat Nafarette, 6-2, 6-1, while San Diego's Lise Marbach defeated Tadaki, 4-6, 7-5, 3-6.

MASTERS TAKE COURT FOR QUARTERS, SEMIS

Quarterfinals and semifinals of the Honolulu Masters Open will be today at Oahu Club (6800 Hawaii Kai Dr.). The Masters is this year's Hawai'i Open Championship for men and women. The winner of tomorrow's men's final receives a wild card into the main draw of the USTA Challenger event on O'ahu in January.

Play begins at 8 a.m. today, and includes second-seeded Mikael Maatta and state high school champ Jared Spiker, who is seeded fifth.

Leilani Magee is seeded first in the six-person women's field. Her semifinal starts at 11 a.m. today.

Ikaika Jobe is seeded first in the men's draw, which has 39 entries. Jobe and University of Hawai'i junior Dennis Lajola won this year's Men's Night Doubles title, defeating Maatta and Jan-Axel Tribler.

Men's and women's finals start at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow, with doubles to follow.

WATER POLO

RAINBOWS TRYING TO RAISE $40,000

The University of Hawai'i water polo team, which finished fourth at the NCAA Women's Championships last spring, is trying to raise $40,000 for new equipment and to take a training trip to Italy prior to its 2010 season.
