CFB-WAC: Fresno State rips New Mexico State 34-3

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Ryan Mathews, the nation's leading rusher, paced Fresno State with 157 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns as the Bulldogs beat New Mexico State 34-3 Saturday night.

Mathews had scoring runs of 1 yard and 68 yards, to bring his season total to 1,131 rushing yards.

Punt returner Chastin West also had a big game, returning a kick 88 yards for a touchdown for the Bulldogs (4-3, 3-1 Western Athletic Conference).

Quarterback Ryan Colburn completed 7-of-14 passes for 164 yards. Wide receiver Seyi Ajirotutu led the Bulldogs with three catches for 64 yards. Jamel Hamler added three grabs for 63 yards.

Fresno State benefited from a defensive touchdown, a 17-yard interception and run by junior safety Lorne Bell. The play led to a 7-3 Bulldogs lead, one they only build upon.

New Mexico State (3-5, 1-3) managed just 283 total yards. Aggie running back Seth Smith had 105 yards on 19 carries.

Quarterback Jeff Fleming, who came on in a relief role for starter Trevor Walls, carried the ball 12 times for 78 yards. New Mexico State mustered just 45 yards in the passing game.

Fresno State kicker Kevin Goessling knocked in two field goals, from 23 and 43 yards.
