ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Buffalo Bills quarterback Trent Edwards needs further evaluation after sustaining the second concussion of his NFL career, leaving the starter’s status uncertain for Buffalo’s game at Carolina this weekend.
Coach Dick Jauron said Monday that Edwards was healthy enough to travel home with the team after he was knocked out in the second quarter of a 16-13 overtime win at the New York Jets on Sunday. “We’ll take that day to day and see how he comes out of this thing,” Jauron said.
Rather than answering a question of whether he hoped Edwards would be able to start against the Panthers on Sunday, Jauron said, “I’m hopeful he’s healthy.”
If Edwards can’t play, Ryan Fitzpatrick would take over after going 10 of 25 for 116 yards and a touchdown in rallying Buffalo (2-4) to victory.
Edwards was hurt when he was sacked while sandwiched between Jets defenders David Harris and Calvin Pace, who drove him backward into the turf. Edwards, in his third year, also sustained a concussion in a loss at Arizona on Oct. 5.
The injury came at a time when questions were being raised about Edwards’ status as starter after three consecutive losses. Edwards, who went 5 of 5 for 43 yards against the Jets, had thrown five interceptions and only one touchdown in his previous three games.
Edwards wasn’t the only player hurt against the Jets as the list of injured Bills players continues to mount.
Tight end Shawn Nelson also will be monitored this week after sustaining a concussion. Jauron didn’t have an update on the injuries to starting defensive tackle Kyle Williams (shoulder strain), starting safety Donte Whitner (ankle) and starting cornerback Terrence McGee (bruised chest).
Whitner had just returned after missing two weeks with torn ligaments in his thumb. Buffalo’s also without starting safety Bryan Scott, who’s missed three games with a sprained left ankle, and starting right tackle Jonathan Scott, who’s missed a week with an ankle injury.
