County, college join forces to launch farmers market

Advertiser Staff

A new community market that includes Garden Island-grown fruits and vegetables, plus prepared foods and products made from local ingredients, debuted last Saturday on the grounds of Kaua'i Community College in Puhi.

The market will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday as a joint project of the college and the Kaua'i County Farm Bureau.

Last week's kickoff included cooking demonstrations by culinary arts students, a tour of college's community garden, food booths, baked goods and gardening tips.

"What makes this market unique is that it brings all the pieces together, from seed to table, to support buying and eating local," said Melissa McFerrin, Kaua'i County Farm Bureau executive administrator. "There has been such a strong public interest in supporting agriculture, and this is one of many ways we can do this as a community."
