Jacques Rogge easily won re-election as president of the International Olympic Committee and after more than a century on the sidelines, golf will return to the Olympics at the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro. Rugby, last played in 1924, is coming back as well.

Both were reinstated for the 2016 and 2020 games after a vote yesterday by the International Olympic Committee. They are the first sports added since triathlon and taekwondo joined the program for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Rogge, a 67-year-old Belgian who has served as IOC president since 2001, was the only candidate and needed a simple majority in the vote for a final four-year term. The IOC voted 88-1 in favor of his re-election.

"You have given me a great honor. We have accomplished a lot together," Rogge said. "Our focus now is on the future. We have a lot of work to do."

Golf will stage a 72-hole stroke-play tournament for men and women, with 60 players in each field. Rugby will organize a four-day seven-a-side tournament — instead of the more traditional 15-a-side game — for 12 men's and women's teams.

AMERICANS STILL LEAD

Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker dominate no matter what the format. Phil Mickelson wins no matter whom he has for a partner. It still isn't enough for the Americans to shake the pesky International team in the Presidents Cup in San Francisco.

For the second straight day, the Americans were poised to take a comfortable lead.

But the International team rallied to win two late matches to split the fourballs session, 3-3, and keep the Americans' lead at one point, 6 1/2-5 1/2

Ernie Els and Mike Weir won the final three holes to turn defeat into a 2-up victory over Jim Furyk and Anthony Kim, the clinching shot by Weir from the base of the bleachers and onto the green at the par-5 18th for an eagle that was conceded.

Tim Clark rolled in a 15-foot eagle as he and Singh won the last two holes for a 1-up victory over Lucas Glover and Stewart Cink.

Woods and Stricker, the only players at Harding Park who have not trailed at any point over the past two days, cruised to a 5 and 3 victory over Geoff Ogilvy and Angel Cabrera, while Mickelson teamed with justin Leonard for a 3 and 2 victory over Retief Goosen and Adam Scott.

MERCURY WIN WNBA

The Phoenix Mercury are WNBA champions for the second time in three seasons, leaning on their "big three" to pull out a 94-86 victory over the Indiana Fever in the deciding Game 5 last night in Phoenix.

League and finals MVP Diana Taurasi scored 26 points, Cappie Pondexter 24, and Penny Taylor sank two crucial free throws with 37.7 seconds left as the Mercury held off a late rally to win the intense series 3-2.

"This is what we do, we make big plays," Taurasi said, holding a towel over her head in the champagne-drenched locker room. "We have people that step up and love to live the moment. It's a great team, great team."

Tammy Sutton-Brown scored 22 points, and Jessica Davenport had a career-high 18 for Indiana in its first finals appearance.
