MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Twins have wanted out of the Metrodome for years.
They're playing as if they want to stay a little longer.
Jeff Manship's first major league win was well-timed for the Twins, who got a grand slam from Delmon Young and hung on for a 10-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals last night that cut Detroit's AL Central lead to one game.
The Twins and Tigers each have two games remaining.
"We've been playing catchup for a long time here, and it's not easy," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Every day is a must-win, it seems like."
Young had five RBIs, beginning with his first career slam in the first inning against Lenny DiNardo (0-3) that sent the Twins to their 14th win in their past 18 games.
The Royals rallied to put the tying run at the plate in the eighth after falling behind 10-0.
Following Mitch Maier's two-run single off Jose Mijares that reduced Minnesota's lead to 10-7, Matt Guerrier got the last two outs of the inning and Joe Nathan pitched the ninth for his 46th save, a Twins' single-season record.
Manship (1-1) was charged with four runs (three earned) in 5 1/3 innings. Striking out four, the rookie right-hander was hurt by a passed ball by Mauer and a handful of soft singles.
"Given the situation, it makes it even better when you can throw well," said Manship.
WHITE SOX 8, TIGERS 0
Jake Peavy (3-0) spaced two hits over eight scoreless innings, Scott Podsednik led off the game with a home run, and Carlos Quentin also homered as visiting Chicago handed AL Central-leading Detroit its second loss in a row.
ANGELS 5, ATHLETICS 2
Juan Rivera homered and Jered Weaver (16-8) scattered three hits over five scoreless innings as visiting Los Angeles sent Oakland to its fifth straight loss.
ORIOLES 13, BLUE JAYS 7
Michael Aubrey hit a two-run homer and his first career grand slam, Matt Wieters added a three-run shot, and host Baltimore ended Toronto's six-game winning streak.
Before the game, the Orioles exercised the 2010 option on manager Dave Trembley's contract, assuring his return next season.
RED SOX 6, INDIANS 2
Daisuke Matsuzaka (4-6) allowed two runs on five hits in six innings and Victor Martinez had an RBI single in a three-run bottom of the third to extend his hitting streak to 28 games as Boston sent Cleveland to a club-record 13th straight road loss.
RAYS 13, YANKEES 4
B.J. Upton hit for the cycle and drove in six runs ruined CC Sabathia's (19-8) bid to become a 20-game winner, and David Price (10-7) allowed one run and two hits in seven innings to lead host Tampa Bay past New York.
RANGERS 7, MARINERS 4
With two outs, Taylor Teagarden hit a go-ahead RBI single and Elvis Andrus followed with a two-run double to cap a three-run top of the ninth that lifted Texas over Seattle.
