2 men killed, 1 injured in one-car crash on Kahekili
A single-vehicle crash Wednesday night killed two men and left another in critical condition, Maui police said.
The dead men was identified as Nailama Kana, 20, and Tyson Latham, 20, both of Waihe'e. Police said Kana was the driver of the car. Kana died in the accident, and Latham was pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center at 12:30 p.m. yesterday.
A 17-year-old passenger of Waihe'e was being treated at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The accident happened shortly after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on Kahekili Highway, about a half-mile north of Wilipohaku Street in Waihe'e.
Police said a 2004 Mazda sedan driven by Kana was traveling north when it went out of control, crossed the center line, returned to the northbound lane and left the road. The car then hit an embankment, overturned and came to rest against a tree.
Fire rescue personnel had to extricate the men from the car.
Police said the men were wearing their seat belts and that speed is suspected as a contributing factor in the crash.
The deaths were Maui County's 15th and 16th traffic fatalities of the year, compared to 14 at this time last year.
