WAILUKU — A single-vehicle crash last night killed one man and left two others in critical condition, Maui police say.
The dead man was identified as 20-year-old Nailama Kana of Waihee. Police say he was the driver of the car. Two passengers, 20 and 17, both of Waihee, are at the Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The accident took place shortly after 10:30 on Kahekili Highway, about a half-mile north of Wilipohaku Street in Waihee.
Police say the 2004 Mazda sedan Kana was driving was headed north when it went out of control, crossed the centerline, returned to the north-bound lane and then left the road. The car then hit an embankment, overturned and came to rest against a tree.
Fire rescue personnel had to extricate the men from the car.
Police said the men were wearing their seatbelts and that speed is suspected as a contributing factor in the crash.
The death was Maui County’s 15th traffic fatality of the year, compared to 14 at this time last year.
